ISDP 2020 Virtual Meeting Workshop: Using Experience Sampling Method (ESM) for studying parenting: A practical workshop

 Wed, October 21 – 11:00 – 12:00 Eastern Time

ESM Workshop sponsored by the International Perinatal Brain and Behavior Network (IPBBN)

Brief introduction
By: Marion I. van den Heuvel – Tilburg University, The Netherlands

Positive parenting is extremely important for healthy development of the child. Many researchers study parenting by observing parenting behaviors or by parent and/or child self-report questionnaires.

Here, we will introduce the Experience Sampling Method (ESM) for examining parenting – a research method of gathering high amounts of data over a short period of time. This method is highly suited for the dynamic processes of parenting and mother-child interactions.

In this symposium, a group of young researchers from the “Parenting ESM group” in the Netherlands and Belgium will provide you with a practical overview of ESM research. Anne Burlow and Savannah Boele will start the symposium by explaining what ESM is. Next, Loes Janssen will provide an overview of the software that can be used for ESM, including all wearables that can be used to enhance ESM research. Dr. Myrthe Boekhorst will continue by explaining how to develop an ESM questionnaire and Robin Achterhof will give a detailed guide on how to pre-register your ESM study. Finally, Lisanne de Moor will finish with some pitfalls of ESM research and how to avoid them.
